'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' is Bringing in Madame Hydra as its Next Villain
ABC
Despite being about the non-superheroes living in the MCU (at least at first), Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been known for taking on plenty of Marvel's heavier hitters like the Inhumans and Ghost Rider. And with all the Hydra stuff going on lately, the show's set to bring on Marvel villain Madame Hydra with the show's upcoming episode "What If..." Some spoilers for that episode ahead.

According to Deadline, said episode recently screened at WonderCon in Anaheim, California, where Madame Hydra (also known as "Viper") made a surprise appearance in the "Framework" computer simulation. Even more surprising was how she was played by actress Mallory Jansen, who's already played two other characters in the show: Agnes Kitsworth and her Life Model Decoy, Aida.

Here's a first look at the episode, which also features the return of Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), who hasn't been a member of the main cast for quite a while (this show's changed a lot since season 1):

Speaking to EW, executive producers Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen talked up the new villain. It's vague, but it makes sense that they don't want to give everything away before the episode airs:
Opening quote
"Since we're bringing back Hydra in the Framework, we thought we'd bring it back with a force to be reckoned with. Madame Hydra is a villain with the perfect combo of strength, sexy, and scary. We've thrown many challenges Mallory's way and she's always up for the task. We're excited for fans to see how she makes Madame Hydra come to life."
Closing quote

Madame Hydra is, as the name implies, one of Hydra's most prominent members - even though she has no superpowers herself, she's been trained by Hydra since her childhood and is a skilled fighter, checking all the boxes on the "Badass Normal" archetype that other superheroes/villains like Batman and Deathstroke fit. She's also built up an immunity to most forms of poison, hence the poison-themed "Viper" alias.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns April 4, 2017.
