No matter your stance on previous movies from the Alien franchise, it's hard to deny that Alien: Covenant looks pretty promising—as much as watching a disgusting monster slowly murder a team of likeable humans can be described as "promising".

A large part of the appeal is the fact that the majority of Covenant's promotional materials thus far have been leaning heavily on familiar tropes for the franchise, attempting to evoke the slow, quiet, tense atmosphere of the original 1979 space horror classic. This is a trend which has been continued with three new TV spots for the film, which show off the movie's many glistening alien eggs, eerie spaceship corridors, and screaming women.

That's some classic Alien action right there.

The aim here is to shake off as much of the Prometheus stench as possible. Considering how unpopular Ridley Scott's last movie in this universe proved, it's clear that Covenant wants you to forget about Prometheus amid promises that the series is returning to its roots.

But that's a tough claim to make, considering Covenant is believed to continue many threads established by Prometheus, bringing back the psychotic android David among other plot points. This isn't to say that a follow-up film is going to be inherently bad, but it's hard to trust Ridley Scott isn't pulling a bait and switch and taking a second shot at the mess that was Prometheus. Until Covenant hits theaters, we should take these fifteen-second trailers with a grain of salt.
