With Iron Fist now up on Netflix (for better or worse), there's nothing on Marvel's television release schedule (apart from more Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) to distract us from the upcoming crossover series, The Defenders. We've been waiting a long, long time for this day.

In anticipation of the show's release, a new teaser trailer has begun circulating on the web, which shows the four main heroes, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Daredevil, and Iron Fist, piling into an elevator together:

This is our first glimpse at the team of heroes on screen together—while Luke Cage and Jessica Jones have shared scenes before, the four have mostly kept to their own parts of New York. The question, then, is whether the long-awaited team-up is a good idea in the first place. We're going to say yes.

It's no secret that the shows within Marvel's Netflix endeavor have been met with a mix of praise and "mehs" (or, more recently, angry shouting). While audiences praised the first season of Daredevil and were impressed with the nuance in Jessica Jones, the magic started to fade by the time Luke Cage got his own show, and Danny Rand's Iron Fist series has received some of the worst reviews of any Marvel property in recent years.

There is an awkwardness to the group in this teaser, albeit an intentional one, and it's an interesting visual to start fans off with. Presumably, the relationship within the group will mirror that of the Avengers, who spend the majority of their first movie in-fighting and unwilling to trust each other. There are definitely sour notes among The Defenders' solo shows, but it's worth remembering that the same can be said of the pre-Avengers MCU movies—The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man 2 stand out as probably the worst.

If The Defenders manages to maintain the quirky sense of humor that's on display in this clip, and if it borrows from the way The Avengers stirs up chemistry between its heroes, then we're betting Netflix's big superhero team-up will find its footing. There are so many personalities to play off of, from Luke Cage's stoicism to Daredevil's casual badassery. Jones has been through a hell of a lot, and Danny's really the newcomer here—there's a chance for some cross-mentorship. There's a lot of potential here, and we're betting that the crossover will bring out the best in each of these heroes.
