'Rick and Morty' Could Help Bring Back McDonald's Szechuan Sauce
Adult Swim
Leave it to Rick and Morty, one of the most inventive cartoons around right now, to start a campaign to bring back an obscure McDonald's movie tie-in sauce from 20 years ago. And then possibly succeed with that campaign.

In the surprise April Fool's Day season 3 premiere, which they streamed on Adult Swim's website until midnight, Rick is forced to relive an old memory by his alien captors, only to instead become obsessed with once again tasting the McDonald's Szechuan sauce which came out at the same time. The Szechuan sauce was a limited time Chicken McNugget dipping sauce that McDonald's really did offer back in 1998, as a tie in to Disney's Mulan, a fact that inexplicably becomes a running joke over the episode.

The episode (called "The Rickshank Rickdemption") sparked thousands of fans' curiosity about the sauce, and within hours of it airing a full-on campaign began to convince McDonald's to bring back the Szechuan McNugget sauce. A petition was created on Change.org that has so far garnered over 26,000 signatures, some took to creating their own versions of the sauce, and people are selling photos of the sauce for thousands of dollars on eBay. It's madness.

But here's the craziest part: it's working. On April 2, McDonald's tweeted about the sensation, mimicking Rick's catchphrase by tweeting at the official Rick and Morty account. Then on April 3, McDonald's chef Mike Haracz replied on Twitter to someone pleading with him to recreate the sauce by writing, "I'll see what I can do." And now, a spokesperson for McDonald's has made the following statement about the sauce's possible return:

Opening quote
"We never say never, because when our customers speak, we listen. And to paraphrase some of our most enthusiastic fans, our sauce is so good that it would be worth waiting 9 seasons or 97 years for."
Closing quote

So, there you have it. It sounds like Rick might not have to wait 9 seasons like he said in the episode, because we may all be chowing down on that sweet Mulan sauce before the next episode of Rick and Morty season 3 airs - which should hopefully be this summer.
