'Thor: Ragnarok' Trailer Shows Thor Facing Off Against the Hulk (Without Mjolnir)
A soundtrack can make all the difference, as Guardians of the Galaxy proved. The Suicide Squad, Justice League, and Battlefield 1 trailers beat the White Stripes into our skulls for years to come, but our first good look at Thor: Ragnarok chooses instead to get the Led out with a classic. And guess what, it's goddamn amazing.

Now that's how you make a trailer.

While neither of the previous Thor movies has made the best use of its lead character, choosing to keep him tied to Earth when there are far more interesting stories to tell out in the Nine Realms, it's clear that Marvel is trying a new approach with this movie—supernatural comedy director Taika Waititi is in the director's chair this time around, and his effect on the movie's tone and style is palpable.

Whereas previous Thor movies (and most Marvel films in general) attempt to keep the main character grounded in a familiar setting, the Ragnarok trailer shows off a lot of bright, colorful action. From the music choice to the jokes in the trailer, this is clearly a movie that's not going to take itself too seriously, and is hopefully going to breathe new life into the Thor franchise, the way the Russo Brothers managed to do with their Captain America movies.

At the same time, the trailer shows Thor facing the biggest, most powerful opponents we've seen, apart from Ultron: we've got Hela, the goddess of death, destroying Asgard and apparently casting Thor out of his home, and then we have the Hulk in full rage-mode, all against a beaten, broken Thor without his Mjolnir. It finally looks like this movie will give Thor an adversary worth fighting—something that his first two movies failed to deliver.

Either way, we're looking forward to seeing how Ragnarok fits into the Infinity War build-up—we're finally off Earth and exploring Asgard/the galaxy, so we're probably going to run into another Stone, possibly the rumored one that Heimdall supposedly holds.
