A 'Last Jedi' Leak Reveals Details on Starships and a New Character

The lengths Lucasfilm goes to in order to stop leaks is legendary (does "Blue Harvest" ring any bells?), but Star Wars fans are still at it. Today, fan site Making Star Wars has details about the character that Laura Dern will be playing in the upcoming The Last Jedi. So far, it sounds like her character will provide a kind of rival to General Organa.

According to the report, Dern's character, named Admiral Holdo, will be a Resistance leader who differs from General Organa in almost every way, from her appearance—brightly colored clothes and hair which feels "like a design from the prequel era of Star Wars" —to her style of leadership.

This suggests that this time around, the Resistance will be struggling from internal crises which make it all the more difficult to fight against the First Order. Making Star Wars has also reported that the Resistance will be making use of other BB droids, like BB-8 but older in design, looking a little outdated compared to some of the newer technology in the movie.

This being the case, it sounds like The Last Jedi will mirror The Empire Strikes Back: we'll probably be seeing The First Order making great strides against the heroes, while the Resistance is scattered and put in a more desperate position. This makes sense, especially following the attack from Starkiller Base in The Force Awakens.

The good news is that this time around, there will at least be some cool new ship designs. The Making Star Wars article describes two new starships that will be appearing in the movie—both some original fighter ships with ball-like gun turrets similar to Republic dropships from Attack of the Clones, and a new mega star destroyer which, by the sounds of it, could be Snoke's personal mode of transport. Poe Dameron will return with a souped-up ship with a new design, though it's not clear if BB-8 will be joining him.

Our hope, as always, is that this new movie will do something to differentiate itself from previous installments in the franchise. The biggest criticism that's held up against The Force Awakens is that the movie plays things too safe and mirrors A New Hope too closely, but Rogue One showed that grit and a murky plot can work with Star Wars. At this point, The Last Jedi needs to do something unique in order to avoid being another retread. Otherwise, we might as well stay home and watch Empire again, imagining Vader with 90% less charisma, swinging that stupid claymore lightsaber.
