'Infinity War' Set Footage Shows a Mysterious Motion Capture Villain
Marvel/Disney
Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War is already going to feature more characters than any superhero movie ever, much more than the crowded Captain America: Civil War, so we'd be just fine if they didn't add anybody new to the already bloated cast. But some new behind the scenes footage from the film's set shows what many fans think could be a classic character from Marvel's cosmic side, which if true, would definitely be something to be excited about.

The footage shows Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch doing battle with a man in a motion-capture suit who is wielding a staff with a light on one end that looks vaguely familiar. Check it out below.

Due to the lights on the character's staff, speculation quickly traveled around the internet that the character must be Firelord. Best known as a herald of Galactus, Firelord wields the Power Cosmic - like Silver Surfer - which he utilizes in flames on his body and a flaming staff. He's also from Xandar, which we've already seen on screen in Guardians of the Galaxy. The character was most prominent in comics in the 1980s, and had a fairly significant role in taking on Thanos in the original "Infinity Gauntlet" storyline back in 1991.

But before you get too excited about Firelord appearing in Infinity War, that could very easily not be Firelord in the video. For one, it's not clear if Marvel even owns the film rights to the character - both Galactus and Silver Surfer belong to Fox as part of the Fantastic Four property, and given that Firelord is another herald of Galactus, we'd guess that Fox owns him too (unless both Marvel and Fox try to claim him, à la Quicksilver). And second, the man in the video has lights on just one end of his staff - if that's the main piece of evidence we're basing this theory on - whereas Firelord's staff burns at both ends.

And third, we're pretty sure it's another character who's already been heavily rumored as being part of the film. Thanos' Black Order, his four most trusted lieutenants, are expected to appear as henchmen, with previous leaked set photos featuring two motion-capture actors in nearly identical get-ups as "Firelord" and wielding staff-like weapons. So if we had to guess, we'd say that the character in the new footage is yet another motion-captured member of the Black Order with yet another staff-like weapon.

And while the Black Order is cool and all, they've only been around in the comics since 2013. Call us old-fashioned, but fans will always gravitate toward comic book characters with a little bit of history, which Firelord has in spades. So if there's any chance that Firelord is in Infinity War, then we'll be over the moon. But if not, then we'll just have to make due with the new villains on the block.

Avengers: Infinity War comes out May 4, 2018.
