'Twin Peaks' Releases Word Puzzles to Promote the New Episodes

The return of cult favorite show Twin Peaks, David Lynch's vaguely demonic small-town surrealist murder mystery, is finally premiering next month. And save for several photos of the reunited cast, so far all of the teasers have been vague and up for interpretation.

For any other show, that might be annoying. But this is Twin Peaks, and anyone whose seen the original series from 1990 knows that's exactly in line with the show's cryptic style. So keeping with that trend, the show's YouTube account has been posting word puzzles for you to keep busy until the premiere on Showtime.

As of this writing, they've posted four, each one set to moody music from the original show. Unlike the show, these puzzles actually have answers: they're all messages contorted into shapes like the show's titular twin peaks, a log cabin (there's a hint in there), or the ring from the Fire Walk With Me movie. The messages themselves vary from popular quotes to questions that the old show never answered, and that the new show may possibly answer.

The puzzles aren't actually that difficult (the letters aren't even scrambled, in case you were expecting that), but each video has the answer posted in the description if you get stumped. And to save you some time, the last two puzzles are different versions of the same message, which contain the real teaser here.

For the sake of discussion, those final two puzzles both say (spoilers) "What is happening with Agent Cooper?" alluding to the last episode's cliffhanger of Dale Cooper trapped inside the Black Lodge, while his crazy doppelganger ran free in the outside world and broke mirrors with his face. If the show's going to keep a coherent story (and as great as the show is, that doesn't always happen), then Cooper's very serious problem will absolutely have to be addressed. The revival may even begin in the Black Lodge, if we're lucky.

Twin Peaks returns May 21, 2017 at 9 p.m. on Showtime.
