When DC swooped in and signed the world's biggest movie star (literally and figuratively), Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, it was considered a major coup for the company in keeping him out of rival Marvel's hands. Someone with his stature and star power could certainly help the DCEU better compete with the MCU, it was thought.

So DC of course did the most DC thing ever and cast him as the relatively obscure villain Black Adam in the almost as obscure Shazam movie. That plan was eventually scrapped, because it would be a waste of The Rock's talents, and word came down that the Shazam movie would be accompanied by Black Adam movie with Johnson front and center. The whole situation was messy, and with no one cast as Shazam (previously known as "Captain Marvel," before DC just let Marvel use that for their superhero), it seemed like Black Adam was more likely to be made than Shazam.

But that doesn't mean the Shazam movie has gone away, as Johnson recently assured. Speaking to MTV News, he confirmed he's going to star in both Black Adam and Shazam:
Opening quote
"[What] we decided to do was to create a scenario where Black Adam will have his stand-alone movie, and Captain Marvel/Shazam will have his stand-alone movie. We're building up our world that way, and then we can come together at some other point. We have a surprise for Black Adam coming up, I can't tell you what it is, but it is gonna be - are the cameras off - the surprise with Black Adam is just gonna be, it's just f-king awesome."
Closing quote

However, there's also this Black Adam surprise he's hinting at, which we don't think has anything to do with Shazam. But it does actually seem to fit in nicely with a new rumor floating around that Black Adam will be the villain in Man of Steel 2.

Now the rumor, which originated on Reddit and comes to us via iO9, doesn't completely mesh with what Johnson is saying, because it claims Shazam has been scrapped - which Johnson says is not the case - in favor of him appearing in Man of Steel 2. But it could be that this source has some correct information and some outdated information, and the idea of putting The Rock's Black Adam in Man of Steel 2 seems like a pretty high profile way to introduce what could be a very important character in the DCEU.

But at the end of the day, it's still a rumor from Reddit, so we'll wait for official confirmation or at least a rumor mill with a better track record. But any way the DCEU ends up shoehorning Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam into their movies is just fine by us. As long as his mom's name isn't Martha.
