The Next 'Star Wars' Spinoff Could Be Announced This Summer
Lucasfilm/Disney
While the films in the main Star Wars saga get most of the attention, and deservedly so, we'll admit we have a soft spot for the standalone movies. Rogue One was awesome, and the Han Solo spinoff sounds like it's going to be incredible. So naturally, we're anxious to hear what the next solo Star Wars film is going to be, and it sounds like we won't have much of a wait before we find out.

Kathleen Kennedy, the head of Lucasfilm, spoke with MTV News at Star Wars Celebration over the weekend, and she said we can expect an announcement about the next Star Wars spinoff movie sooner rather than later:

Opening quote
"I think we're getting close. My hope would be sometime around the summer. I never want to predict the creative process because it is its own thing, so we're in the midst of those discussions right now."
Closing quote

Obviously, this is great news, as the sooner we find out when the next Star Wars spinoff is coming out, the sooner we can start counting down the days until it arrives. But while it's great that a new film could be announced in just a few months, there's still the matter of trying to figure out what said new film will be about.

The smart money is on either an Obi-Wan Kenobi or Boba Fett prequel, but that's not necessarily going to be the case (there's already some rumors as to why a solo Obi-Wan movie wouldn't happen). Rogue One was a pretty random story to begin the standalone experiment, and it worked out well, so Lucasfilm may go back to the well of finding another original, ensemble-led story like it rather than focusing on just one familiar character like with the Han Solo film.

It would actually be better if they went this route for the next movie. It'd be great if the standalone films alternated between unique stories set in the Star Wars universe, like Rogue One, and prequels focused on beloved classic characters like Han Solo. And since Han Solo will be the next spinoff to hit theaters in 2018, we'd love for the 2020 Star Wars release to be a new, untold story before maybe seeing what Boba Fett's up to in 2022.

But since we're not calling the shots at Lucasfilm (...yet), we'll be at the mercy of Disney's announcement this summer.
