James Gunn Will Return Again to Direct 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3'
Marvel/Disney
Marvel has a habit of swapping out directors for their various franchises - both John Favreau and Shane Black have directed Iron Man films, both Kenneth Branagh and Taika Waititi have directed Thor movies, etc. But the Guardians of the Galaxy movies have always had writer/director James Gunn, the main creative force behind the first film and the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (though there's some debate over how much of the original film he wrote himself).

So perhaps surprising nobody, Gunn is onboard to direct the inevitable Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 when it Marvel Studios begins work on it. Wanting to break the news to the fans before the big Vol. 2 press junket begins, Gunn wrote out a long and surprisingly heartfelt Facebook post answering the "Is he making Vol. 3?"  question:

Opening quote
"Before I was able to honestly answer this, I needed to know it was, in my heart, what I truly felt called to do. There is a history in Hollywood of haphazard endings to trilogies, and I didn't want to become a part of that dishonorable tradition of pretending the third one doesn't exist. I couldn't do it for the money, and I couldn't do it because it was what other people wanted me to do. I needed to do it because it was what I needed to do. I have never made choices in my career based on anything other than passion and love for the stories and characters, and I didn't want to start now.

So, after many months of ruminations and discussions, I know the answer... So, yes, I'm returning to write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Gunn, who's frequently outspoken about the movies, had already given an unofficial confirmation that a third GotG movie would happen (because again, why wouldn't it?). But he wasn't sure at the time whether he'd be in charge of it, suggesting Marvel would move forward on the project with or without him onboard. While Marvel probably would have gone ahead without Gunn had he refused, that won't be an issue anymore.

The full Facebook post was several paragraphs long, and Gunn also answered a couple other questions he was expecting to receive soon. Regarding if there was more pressure dealing with the sequel to a beloved film, he says there was less, because this time he knows there's an audience for the once-obscure Marvel heroes. He also described getting to work with Kurt Russell and Sylvester Stallone:

Opening quote
"Daunting and at times overwhelming – I ran around in my backyard as a kid pretending to be Snake Plissken and John Rambo, so these guys are true icons to me."

The only hints Gunn gave toward what Vol. 3 might be about was that it'd connect to Avengers: Infinity War, something Marvel has been building toward for years. But considering Vol. 2 doesn't come out for another month, that speculation may have to wait until everyone's actually seen the second film. Assuming that's as clever as the first film, then it should be welcome news that Gunn is sticking around.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 comes out May 5, 2017.
