The 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Director Wants to Make a Christmas Special

Everybody loves the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special, or rather, everyone loves to hate it. It's one of the most horribly produced examples of egregious pop culture capitalization in history, and it will forever remain a hilarious black eye on the franchise's legacy.

But despite its awful, nonsensical plot, it's admittedly fun to watch, which is why it's pleasing to hear that we might actually get to see a Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special done in the same vein (but better). Now this is far from a done deal, but Guardians writer/director James Gunn (who just announced he's returning for Vol. 3) revealed recently in a Twitter Q&A that he has had several conversations with Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige about setting up his space-faring misfits with their own Christmas special.

That hardly serves as an official announcement, but it's definitely a fun idea, and Feige would be the one to make that decision. We especially like how Gunn mentions that he would do his special the way he remembers the Star Wars special from when he was a kid, instead of reproducing the interstellar dumpster fire that it actually is. Nostalgia would likely play a heavy role in the special's production, if it ever comes to pass, and we would be totally cool with a Guardians Holiday Special that felt like it was filmed in 1978 but kept the franchise's modern comedic sensibility.

The movie's cast would definitely be able to pull it off, though logistically it may be a bit tough to make it happen. Disney does own plenty of television networks, though, including ABC, and an old school holiday special starring the Guardians of the Galaxy could easily fit in on any one of their schedules once December rolls around. It could also make for a great Marvel short, much like those clips of Thor and his roommate Darryl.

And best of all, there'd be no creepy Wookiee Life Day:

In the meantime, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 comes out May 5, 2017.
