'Kingsman: The Golden Circle' Trailer Looks Like James Bond With 100% More Humor

Considering that the first Kingsman movie involves a musical montage of world leaders' heads exploding into fireworks, director Matthew Vaughn probably sat down with his writing team for Kingsman 2 with one question: "How will we top that?". Based on the first trailer, it seems they went with the full-on 'ridiculous gadgets' route: it features a robotic grappling hook arm, a high-tech bottle of cologne, and a London taxi cab that functions as a submarine. Check it out:

The first Kingsman tells the story of an incredibly British secret organization that's devoted to upholding peace throughout the world through appropriately British shenanigans. In this upcoming sequel, the Kingsman headquarters is destroyed and the movie's hero, Eggsy, is forced to team up with agents of Statesman, their American counterpart, which is a secret service that seems to specialize in stetsons and bullwhips. Channing Tatum and Jeff Bridges both play members of the cowboy-themed Statesman, and will team up with the heroes from the first movie to take down The Golden Circle, a shadowy organization that's planning something sinister—not to be confused with The Circle, the organization run by Tom Hanks in that movie based on David Eggers' novel.

While James Bond movies seem to have all but abandoned spy gadgets in favor of Sony product placement, the Kingsman movies are a celebration of the often outlandish trappings of the spy genre: there's a bottle of cologne that functions as a bomb (the better to blow up a cable car with), as well as an electrified lasso used by Statesman agents, and a robot guard dog. With the aforementioned robotic arm, we're one step away from a Metal Gear Solid: Phantom Pain movie here.

This is the kind of spy movie that you'd get if you let imaginations run wild. Based on everything that we've seen thus far, it looks like The Golden Circle will keep things classy and funny, as well as justify Matthew Vaughn's excessive use of colorful, colorful violence. Seriously, watch that head-explosion montage.

Kingsman 2: The Golden Circle hits US theaters on September 22nd, 2017.
