'Jurassic World 2' Adds a Secret Partner to the Original Film's Dr. Hammond
Universal
Jurassic World 2, from the sound of it, is attempting to forge a major connection between itself and Steven Spielberg's original Jurassic Park from 1993. We don't know how yet, but we do know who - besides bringing back Jeff Goldblum as Ian Malcolm, World 2 will retroactively add a secretive partner to Dr. Hammond (Richard Attenborough), one who first helped him create the dinosaurs.

We've known for a few months that actor James Cromwell was joining the cast, but he just recently spoke about his new character Benjamin Lockwood and his apparent Park connection. During an appearance on Larry King Now, Cromwell explains Lockwood's backstory and specifically namedrops Attenborough:

Opening quote
"The character Richard Attenborough played, I'm his partner, Benjamin Lockwood. We developed the technology of being able to clone the genes. And so I'm trying to deal with the blowback from what we have done."
Closing quote

That's a sizable shakeup in the Jurassic Park/World universe, and whether or not Lockwood feels like a natural addition to the series or a forced one could easily factor into reviews once World 2 comes out next summer. It's also worth pointing out that "dealing with the blowback" for cloning dinosaurs is the entire plot for every movie in the series, but now that Hammond won't be back (Richard Attenborough passed away in 2014), someone has to be around to take the blame when the dinosaurs inevitable break free.

If Universal wants to find a spot from the original story where they can insert a new character, they chose an easy one: the actual creation of the first dinosaurs happened offscreen - even if Henry Wu (played by B.D. Wong in both Park and World) was supposed to be the main dinosaur inventor - so Lockwood is now an extremely important character who never had a reason to appear in Jurassic Park

Either way, if Goldblum is coming back, his character of Malcolm is going to need some idealistic scientist to yell at, so hopefully Cromwell is up for the task.

Jurassic World 2 comes out June 22, 2018.
