Black and White Version of 'Logan' Comes to Theaters in May
James Mangold/20th Century Fox
Shortly after Logan premiered to much applause, director James Mangold already had plans to release a black and white cut of the film - since Logan is pretty much a western film that happens to be full of X-Men, an old school version like this made a lot of sense.

Thankfully, Mangold's plans seem to be coming along nicely in the wake of Logan's fantastic reviews, as he now has a release date for the black and white version. While there aren't any announcements yet about what theaters will host it, there's now a firm date of May 16, 2017.

It sounds like this version will only be screening on May 16 unless Mangold says otherwise - which means it's a one-night-only event, similar to The Fifth Element screening which will happen that same week at various theaters across the United States. There may be more screenings in the future if this one sells out quickly, but either way, the black and white Logan will still be available when the Blu-ray comes out on May 23. So if you're busy that night, this version certainly isn't gone forever.

Logan also isn't the only action movie to try something like this, as Mad Max: Fury Road made a similar "black and chrome" edition that saw a small re-release in theaters. And it worked for Fury Road, which was a similar sci-fi-Western that came out to rave reviews. So there's a good chance this new Logan will look really nice, based on some of the black and white promotional material we've already seen.

The full-color Logan is still screening in some theaters, but as Mangold says, don't make plans for May 16, 2017 if you want to see the movie in black and white.
