John Boyega Admits He Was Dumped Because of 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'
Lucasfilm/Disney
Poor John Boyega. It's easy to assume that movie stars live perfect lives in beautiful places surrounded by beautiful people, especially when they're in a hit franchise like Star Wars. But to borrow a phrase, "that's not how the force works" - sometimes, as in Boyega's case, being a big name star can end up getting you rejected during a date.

Speaking to talk show host Graham Norton, John Boyega opened up about a time when he took a girl on a date, only to be rejected the moment she discovered that his face was literally on a billboard for Star Wars: The Force Awakens that they drove past in New York.

Apparently, having been advised by Orlando Bloom of all people to find the love of his life before the Star Wars thing hit, Boyega had met someone that he'd thought was special, but was keeping his career success a secret in order to avoid scaring her off. This strategy didn't exactly work out:

Opening quote
"She didn't know what I did until we were driving through Times Square. She goes 'What do you do for a living?' Looked up and I said, 'That.' It was me over a lightsaber. That was the end of the relationship."
Closing quote

Turns out, some people don't like seeing their date's face on a giant billboard. But now he's probably never going to be able to meet anyone ever again who won't know him best as Finn. Apparently, the Jedi Code forbids love not because it leads to the Dark Side, but because it's a real buzzkill when you're out on a date.

So this week, as we take an early start celebrating Star Wars' unofficial May the 4th holiday, spare some thoughts for a lonely John Boyega, wishing that he had someone to share his wealth and fame with. Being the new face of Star Wars may be great and all, but it can wreak havoc on your love life.

Maybe his character Finn will have better luck in Star Wars: The Last Jedi when it hits theaters December 15, 2017.
