This article contains spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Like nearly every Marvel movie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 features a cameo from Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee. The 94-year-old comics legend has shown up in 29 films to date, including not just movies in the MCU but also most movies featuring the X-Men, Spider-Man, and Fantastic Four (all of which he co-created with Jack Kirby or Steve Ditko) and even Deadpool (which he didn't create, but whatever).

Because of his omnipresence in comic book movies, many fans have posited that Lee is actually playing the same character in all of his appearances. Specifically, they think he's one of the Watchers, powerful cosmic beings whose job it is to observe and record the goings-on of the Marvel Universe, but never to intervene. And wouldn't you know it, his cameo in Guardians 2 essentially confirms it.

In his scene, Stan is hanging out with a group of Watchers, regaling them with tales of his travels - which just so happen to coincide with his cameos, like his appearance as a Fed Ex delivery man in Captain America: Civil War (though that was technically interfering). Then, in the film's end credits, Lee's character is revealed as "The Watchers' Informant," suggesting that while he may not be a Watcher himself, he is aligned with them.

Here's how Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige explained the cameo to Screen Rant:

Opening quote
"Yes, we always thought it would be fun. Stan Lee clearly exists, you know, above and apart from the reality of all the films. So the notion that he could be sitting there on a cosmic pit stop during the jump gate sequence in Guardians was something very fun - James had that idea and we shot that cameo and loved it so much, you know, you see it a couple of times in the movie. It wasn't in for a long time and we put it back in toward the end of the process where he references that time he was a Federal Express agent - we thought it would be fun to put that in there because that really says, so wait a minute, he's this same character who's popped up in all these films."
Closing quote

So there ya go. Stan Lee is the same character in all his Marvel movie appearances, and he's working for the Watchers. Now let's hope he shows up in Infinity War to warn our earthbound heroes about the threat posed by Thanos, because if he's not technically a Watcher, then he should totally be allowed to intervene.
