Two things stand out in the new footage that Sony just released for Spider-Man: Homecoming: first and foremost, this is a Spider-Man whose Spider Sense is on the shoddy side. He can sneak very carefully into his bedroom at night, but he's not going to notice his best friend sitting on the bed next to him while doing so. The second thing that stands out is that, as per all reports we've heard on the subject, Zendaya is excellent as nerdy Mary Jane "Michelle." Watching her psych out Peter when she accuses him of hiding something (along with Peter's speechlessness) is fun. Check it out:

The new footage, which was revealed at the MTV Movie and TV Awards over the weekend, provides a new glimpse at Spider-Man: Homecoming, and is accompanied by a trailer that we've already discussed at length (in summary, it's pretty awesome).

At the same time, though, there is a real problem with the marketing for this movie. While the plot for the first of this year's Marvel movies, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, was kept a secret in all of the film's trailers, Spider-Man: Homecoming is pretty much an open book at this point: by watching the above trailer, it's easy to make a pretty good guess about every plot development in the movie, from Peter's meeting with Tony Stark to his first encounter with the Vulture (and the loss of his new suit). The whole arc is all laid out.

This is the sixth solo movie for the character in the past fifteen years and the third fresh start for the franchise—so let's be honest, there's a lot of familiar ground being tread here—but we can't help but feel that we've already got everything lined up in our heads, except for how Uncle Ben dies in this one. Maybe Tony will say the "great power, great responsibility" line instead.

Spider-Man's Ultimate Foe.
