Director Doug Liman Left the 'Gambit' Movie Because the Script Is Terrible

While Gambit has no shortage of fans—not least beefcake Channing Tatum, who's long been interested in playing the Ragin' Cajun—the Gambit movie seems like the one X-Men film that Fox just can't get off the ground. According to Doug Liman, the director of Edge of Tomorrow and the *good* Bourne movies, this is in large part because the studio just can't get a decent script.

In a recent interview with LRM, Liman, who has moved on to working on Justice League Dark for Warner Bros instead, stated that he "just wasn't feeling it" when reading the movie's script, and decided that it was best to get out quick before getting too attached to the project. In his words, "I've got to connect to the script".

Presumably, this means that the Justice League Dark script is somehow better than what Fox has in store for Gambit, but at the same time, it's safe to say that if Liman was really attached to this movie, he could have ditched the initial script to find something he liked better. It's not uncommon for a director to come on board a project and completely rework a film's initial drafts in order to make something that they're happier with.

The challenge, then, might not have much to do with Gambit's script, but rather that movie industry professionals don't think the project is worth the effort to fix it up. Aside from Channing Tatum, nobody seems to be jumping at the chance to make the movie—which could have something to do with the reputation that Fox has gained for meddling with movies like Fantastic Four.

This is a shame, because the character of Remy LeBeau could be incredible in the right hands. We have fond memories of Gambit from the X-Men cartoon series, and while his comic book adventures have never been as popular as, say, Wolverine's, there's a great superhero heist movie to be told with this character that simply won't see the light of day until a director with the right vision comes along.

In the meantime, it looks like Gambit, and its terrible script, will continue sitting on a shelf as Fox desperately tries to figure out what to do with it.
