'X-Men: Dark Phoenix' Will Likely See Michael Fassbender's Magneto Return
20th Century Fox
If you were hoping for a reboot of Fox's X-Men movie series to get rid of the series' ridiculously convoluted timeline, then we've got some bad news for you. If, on the other hand, if you've been a fan of recent X-Men films like Days of Future Past or Apocalypse, then we have some good news.

According to a new report, Michael Fassbender will return for yet another X-Men movie as Magneto, and we can only assume that James McAvoy and Jennifer Lawrence aren't far behind. The report comes from MTV News' Josh Horowitz, who tweeted that Fassbender will likely appear in Dark Phoenix (previously known under the working title of Supernova) but not in the X-Men spinoff New Mutants, which just started filming. He didn't claim anything beyond that, but later said he has a podcast with Fassbender coming soon with more information.

If you recall, at the end of Apocalypse, Mystique (played by Lawrence) was a good guy again and was training the next generation of X-Men, consisting of Quicksilver, Storm, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, and Jean Grey - many of whom had debuted in the film. Magneto and Professor X were once again getting along following the sixth consecutive film of Charles convincing Erik he's really not all that bad after he tries to destroy the world, and it looked like that would be it for this incarnation of the X-Men.

Producer Simon Kinberg even said as much, calling Apocalypse the end of a trilogy that had begun with X-Men: First Class. But then X-Men: Dark Phoenix was announced, a movie that looks to tell the Dark Phoenix saga after it was infamously botched in 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand. And with Fassbender coming aboard, we're guessing the movie will once again devolve into the same ol' Charles vs. Erik melodrama we've seen over the past three movies. And while we haven't heard anything yet about McAvoy or Lawrence returning yet, here's what Lawrence said last year around the time Apocalypse was released:

Opening quote
"Fassbender and McAvoy and I were all talking. Like, 'Will you come back?' 'I dunno.' 'I'll come back, if you come back.' Fox should be terrified because the deal we made was like if one of us doesn't come back, none of us are … I would love to come back. I love the fans and I love the character. But then you realize how important your year is, like how important three months out of your year is. I don't know. I shouldn't be that honest."
Closing quote

It appears that Fassbender has made the first move in the "I'll come back, if you come back" standoff," which means McAvoy and Lawrence could be close behind. And if that happens, we can look forward to seeing another Magneto vs. Professor X conflict while Mystique pretends to be a bad guy while actually leading the X-Men and being the hero of the film even though she is supposed to be a villain for the billionth time.

So unless Fassbender is only appearing for a cameo, it currently seems like your opinion of Dark Phoenix should be pretty much the same as your opinion of Apocalypse or Days of Future Past, because we're looking at a similar movie.
