New 'Okja' Trailer Showcases Its Cute CGI Monster and a Twisted Sense of Humor

Something really significant seems to have shifted in the marketing for the upcoming Netflix movie, Okja. The initial, artsy "This is for the Cannes" trailer tried to sell the film as some kind of emotional drama about a mysterious, nigh-mythological beast. Now, having secured a spot at Cannes, director Bong Joon-ho presumably feels comfortable throwing back the curtain on what may well be the most bizarre movie of the year, about one girl's quest to save a giant CGI pig monster from being eaten by Tilda Swinton.

We've been following Okja for quite some time, and were already aware of the movie's strong environmental message, as it examines the morality behind using science to overcome the weaknesses in our modern food production system. From this new trailer, though, it seems that the debate at the heart of the movie is going to be even more complex than we'd initially thought, as we are teased with images of animal rights campaigners going to war with an ostensibly environmentalist food company.

Swinton's character, Lucy Mirando, is eager to make environmentally friendly, sustainable meat a reality—yet despite this noble goal, she's framed as an almost Bond-esque villain, one step away from cackling as she thinks gleefully on the reduction of the planet's overall carbon footprint. A previous promo for the movie had shown Miranto contemplating the nightmares that pigs suffer in a short clip that's just enough to establish to audiences that she's somewhat unhinged.

At the front and center of this new trailer, though, is the CGI beats itself, Okja, shown bonding with child caretaker Mija. The message is clear: these are our heroes, and we want them to be happy together even if it's ultimately better for the environment for Okja to be experimented on.

Okja: come for the adorable giant pig, stay for the deep philosophical questions about humanity's relationship with nature.

Okja premieres on Netflix on June 28th, 2017.
