‘Aquaman’ Director Reveals Mera's Colorful and Nautical New Design
James Wan/Twitter

Last time we referenced The Little Mermaid, it was because we were laughing at Medusa's halloween wig from Inhumans. But an Ariel comparison is much more of a compliment this time around, while looking at this first photo of Mera's style in Aquaman.

Director James Wan revealed her costume today by uploading an official set photo to Twitter. The Queen of Atlantis, played by Amber Heard, is in a skin-tight green uniform that appears to have fabric moonlighting as scales. Pair that with her long red hair and we're getting major Poison Ivy vibes from this look. If Ivy went into the ocean to care for the seaweed, this is what she'd wear.

Poison Ivy and Little Mermaid influences aside, Mera looks great and we've seen a lot worse. Her costume is very similar to the one in the comics, although for the film she is sporting Aquaman's symbol on her stomach, perhaps a sign of affiliation or pride. It's also much more colorful that her faded appearance in Justice League, so hopefully Wan's Aquaman may overall be a more colorful adventure than Zack Snyder's dimly lit Justice League this fall.

Here's another photo of the same outfit, this one uploaded by Heard herself. The lighting's a bit dimmer, making it more closely resemble her Justice League outfit:

The Aquaman team is currently filming in Australia in preparation for its delayed release next year. Amber Heard (All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, Syrup, Zombieland) most recently made headlines for divorcing Johnny Depp and donating her settlement to the ACLU and the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles. We're hoping she brings that same regality to her role in the DC Extended Universe.

Catch Mera in Justice League on November 17, 2017, and then in Aquaman on December 21, 2018.
