The 'Venom' Movie Chooses Tom Hardy to Play the Symbiote
Warner Bros. / Columbia
Venom is going to be a weird experiment from Sony Pictures when it comes out. While they're currently letting Marvel Studios use Peter Parker in the MCU-set Spider-Man: Homecoming and Avengers: Infinity War, Venom is going to be separate from all that. So this movie about a Spider-Man villain might not include Spidey.

Which means Sony needs something else to draw in fans, and that's going to be Tom Hardy, who's just been announced in the starring role of Eddie Brock (the man beneath the Venom symbiote). Hardy, who's played everything from Bane in The Dark Knight Rises to Max in Mad Max: Fury Road, is now adding a creepy new role to his resume.

Here's Hardy getting into character, from a Twitter post by Sony making the announcement:

Also coming aboard to direct will be Ruben Fleischer, best known for directing the horror-comedy Zombieland back in 2009. It's hard to imagine Venom being too comedic - the only humor in Spider-Man 3 was Tobey Maguire's dancing, certainly not Topher Grace's Eddie Brock. But having horror experience will be good, as Venom is supposed to be a terrifying supervillain when played by anyone else besides Topher Grace.

The fact that this movie is shooting for an R-rating pushes that horror angle even further, as Venom is likely to be a more serious R-rated movie like Logan, rather than a silly one like Deadpool (whether it will be nearly as good as either film remains to be seen). It's also going to be Sony's latest attempt to create their own Spider-Man cinematic universe. Whether that will work is a big question, because Sony had lots of Amazing Spider-Man films planned before Amazing Spider-Man 2 sank that ship.

With Tom Holland playing Spider-Man in the Avengers films, Sony might bring back Andrew Garfield, which is very unlikely, or they may recast Spidey again (and god, we hope not). But until then, expect Tom Hardy to be leading this new franchise if Venom ends up being a good movie, and if Hardy ends up being a perfect fit for Eddie Brock's symbiote suit.

Venom is slated to come out October 5, 2018.
