When it comes to Marvel's upcoming television show-cum-IMAX experience, Inhumans, there are two very important questions that need to be answered.

Firstly, why does anyone at Marvel Television think any of this is a good idea?

Secondly, and more relevantly, how is the show going to deal with Lockjaw, the giant teleporting dog?

We know that Lockjaw is in the show, as his bluescreen stand-in has been spotted on-set. We also know that Marvel is saving Lockjaw's big reveal for the trailer, as the lovable gargantuan canine was conspicuously absent from the photo of the team that we got a couple of weeks ago.

But, try as Marvel might to keep Lockjaw a secret, Inhumans seems to be one show that's plagued by more leaked details than it deserves. A brief clip from the show's upcoming trailer gives us a look at Lockjaw, alongside Black Bolt, teleporting onto a busy Earth street.

While Marvel might shut the clip down eventually, for now, it shows Lockjaw and Black Bolt appearing suddenly, startling a nearby car. Gone are the fantastical settings of the Inhumans comics, in favor of a very literally pedestrian environment that makes a big teleporting dog feel all the more out of place.

One of the most unusual decisions for this show—that's no doubt related to the need to make it both relatable and cost effective—is the choice to set the story in Hawaii, a long way from the Inhuman royal family's traditional home, the Moon. As far as we currently understand it, the show will tell the story of a group of lunar Inhumans who are exiled and have to hang out, along with their giant teleporting pet, on a tropical island.

Perhaps the biggest problem for fans trying to wrap their heads around what's going on with the show is that the spectacle seems to be more important than the story itself. The focus on IMAX is strange for a TV show, and if this is the level of CGI that we'll be seeing in the show, it's hard to imagine that Lockjaw will look all that great when projected onto a massive domed screen.

Everything about this show, from its lackluster costume design to its overambitious use of CGI on a TV budget, suggests that this is a project which never really recovered from the downgrade in scope that accompanied the journey from Vin Diesel movie to small screen ABC affair. You can say what you like about the first season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but at least that show always knew that it was designed for television, rather than something loftier.

We'll have to wait for the trailer to get a better glimpse at Lockjaw in motion, but thus far, everything about this project suggests that Marvel Television has bit off more than the studio can chew.

Inhumans hits IMAX theaters on September 1st, 2017 before premiering on ABC on September 22nd.
