'Wonder Woman' Bests 'Spider-Man' For Most Anticipated Summer Movie
Warner Bros.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been dominating the DC Expanded Universe critically and commercially ever since the latter came into existence in 2013 with Man of Steel, but it looks like the tide may finally be turning ever so slightly.

Fandango conducted a survey to determine which film was the most highly anticipated of the summer, and DC's Wonder Woman came out on top, beating out Marvel's Spider-Man: Homecoming, which came in second (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is already in theaters, and was not included in the poll). Around 10,000 movie fans voted, and the poll is by no means scientific, but it's still a nice achievement for DC and a good sign for Wonder Woman.

One reason for the victory could be that people are more excited about seeing the first female-led superhero movie ever than they are about seeing the third version of Spider-Man to hit the big screen in a decade. But whatever the reason for its popularity, all that matters is that it's popular. People want to see it, and that's great news for DC, which is in desperate need of a hit.

One person who's pretty excited about the, uh, excitement, is Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins - upon hearing the poll results, she told Fandango:

Opening quote
People weren't clear whether anybody would want to see a Wonder Woman film and I was always like, 'What? Like, it's Wonder Woman, man. This is such a great character!' But I could feel that [positivity] coming from the world at moments, so to have that mirrored back, to have positivity mirrored back at us at this moment in the way certain people are reacting to the movie and then that from the audience is like... I just can't put into words enough how grateful I am and we are for having believed in this movie and having the world come back at us that way. That's unf-kingbelievable!"
Closing quote

After the two superhero flicks - which shows that the genre is far from relinquishing its supremacy at the cinema - the rest of the top ten are as follows, in order of popularity: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, The Dark Tower, Dunkirk, Despicable Me 3, War for the Planet of the Apes, Transformers: The Last Knight, The Mummy, and Baywatch. We're glad to see such excitement for The Dark Tower, but we wish Planet of the Apes ranked a little higher. Oh well, at least it's beating Transformers.

Wonder Woman opens on June 2, 2017 while Spider-Man: Homecoming arrives in theaters over a month later on July 7, 2017.
