Carrie Fisher Had to Slap Oscar Isaac While Filming 'The Last Jedi'

In the wake of Carrie Fisher's passing, everyone who knew her has shared stories about the iconic Star Wars actress. But Oscar Isaac, who plays Poe Dameron in the new trilogy, is one of the few people who can proudly say that Fisher slapped him. Several times.

Isaac recently appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, on the 40th anniversary of the original Star Wars premiere - Colbert, as a lovably huge geek, remembers those days fondly, while the younger Isaac pointed to Return of the Jedi as one of the first movies he saw in theaters. Colbert then asked if Isaac shared any scenes with Fisher, and the answer was quite a few.

And (very mild The Last Jedi spoilers) one scene in particular involves hotshot Poe Dameron apparently saying something snappy while reporting to General Leia Organa, because she slaps Poe during the scene. Not so bad, except that director Rian Johnson decided to shoot the scene for 27 takes, with Fisher hitting a different part of Isaac's face each time to "keep the scene fresh." Here's the full clip, the conversation turns to Carrie Fisher at 2:49:

Isaac remembers it very fondly, and apparently Fisher enjoyed it as well. Isaac told the same story in a Vanity Fair profile, where he suggests Fisher was having a blast getting to continually knock some sense into Poe:

Opening quote
"We did this scene where Carrie has to slap me. I think we did 27 takes in all, and Carrie leaned into it every time, man. She loved hitting me. Rian found such a wonderful way of working with her, and I think she really relished it."
Closing quote

Whichever of the 27 takes ends up being the best one, you can see Leia slap Poe Dameron when Star Wars: The Last Jedi comes out December 15, 2017.
