'New Mutants' Brings in 'Stranger Things' Star Charlie Heaton as Cannonball
Netflix
When the news broke that the X-Men spinoff movie New Mutants was going to be a horror movie, many folks noticed they'd already cast actors with some horror experience: Anya Taylor-Joy has starred in multiple horror flicks like The Witch and Split, and Maisie Williams is fast becoming the scariest character on Game of Thrones as Arya Stark.

That trend is continuing, as Stranger Things star Charlie Heaton is in talks to play the mutant Cannonball, according to The Hollywood Reporter. On Netflix's most lovable horror show (which will become even scarier next season), Heaton plays Jonathan Byers, the no-nonsense, "nobody understands me" photographer and the older brother of missing child Will Byers. And as an actor who nailed the role of a moody teen who escapes from monsters, his inclusion makes sense here.

His role here will be slightly different as Sam Guthrie, a young mutant who grew up in rural Kentucky, and who can propel himself through the air at high speeds, much like a cannonball - think of him as a flying version of Juggernaut (his powers work differently, but it's a similar idea). If New Mutants is using the classic team that director Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) has hinted at, then Cannonball will round out a team including the lycanthropic Wolfsbane (played by Williams), Magik (Taylor-Joy), and as well as Mirage, Sunspot, and possibly Warlock. Rosario Dawson (Daredevil) may also appear in some way.

Heaton is only the latest breakout actor from Stranger Things, with David Harbour (Sheriff Hopper) set to star in the upcoming Hellboy remake and Millie Bobby Brown (who plays Eleven) starring in the 2019 Godzilla: King of Monsters. They're all talented actors, so it's good to see them moving onto bigger projects, not that Stranger Things is a small one anymore.

And if Cannonball is even slightly more cheerful than Jonathan Byers, it'll be nice to see Heaton enjoying himself for once. New Mutants is scheduled to come out April 13, 2018.
