'Valerian' Adds 'Guardians of the Galaxy's Elizabeth Debicki in Last-Minute Role
Marvel/Disney
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is less than two months away now, and with multiple alien-filled trailers out, it's far past the casting stages of production. But with one thousand planets to keep track of, director Luc Besson either missed one character or just had to recast them.

According to Variety, actress Elizabeth Debicki has just joined the movie in a voice-over role, making Valerian her second consecutive sci-fi movie. Anyone who's seen Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 should recognize her as the gold-skinned Sovereign leader, Ayesha, who makes trouble for the Guardians throughout the film using the Ravagers and her army of arcade-fighter pilots (it makes sense in context).

But it doesn't matter if you recognize her, because again, it's just a voice-over role for one of the film's many aliens, or so we assume - her character hasn't been specified yet. Because there's not necessarily any need for reshoots if you're just dubbing over a CGI villain, the last-minute casting shouldn't spell any trouble for the movie. Especially if this is a smaller role, because while Debicki is probably too well-known to play a simple extra, a ship's computer voice or something of that sort would be a good guess for this situation.

The main cast alone is impressive, starring Dane DeHaan (Amazing Spider-Man 2) and Cara Delevigne (Suicide Squad) as space-faring partners Valerian and Laureline, while Clive Owen, Rihanna, and Ethan Hawke appear in supporting roles. The movie is a large, colorful space opera that's being treated as a spiritual successor to Besson's last sci-fi film of this scale, The Fifth Element. Whether it lives up to that remains to be seen.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets comes out July 21, 2017.
