'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' Provides a Look at Kylo Ren's TIE Silencer Ship
Lucasfilm/YouTube
Every now and then, among the rumors and speculation, Lucasfilm likes to throw its loyal Star Wars fans a bone.

A new episode of The Star Wars Show, the Emmy nominated YouTube show (no, really) and official branch of Lucasfilm's continued plans to conquer the known galaxy, has revealed Kylo Ren's personal TIE Fighter. Not content with letting other First Order soldiers get blown up by Poe Dameron, it seems that lil' Ben Solo will be flying into battle himself, just like his granddad in A New Hope. We all remember how well that went, so here's hoping he inherited his dad's piloting skills.

The fighter is called the "TIE Silencer", an exceptionally Kylo Ren name that ignores the fact that sound doesn't travel in the vacuum of space, and it looks a lot like a TIE Interceptor that's been stretched out to make it longer, pointier, and less able to bank with ease. It's also, of course, very similar to the personal TIE that Darth Vader flies around in for a single skirmish around the Death Star, before he realizes just how bad at steering it is and decides to stay nice and safe on the bridge of a command ship instead.

Much like the crossblade lightsaber, the best headcanon for this is that Ben came up with the coolest TIE design he could think of, without paying much heed to how useful it would be in practice, and refusing to learn from his grandfather's bad example. Considering how utterly and completely Kylo Ren got trashed by Rey in The Force Awakens, both in the interrogation room and in their lightsaber duel, it's safe to say that the son of Leia Organa has something to prove this time around, which is probably why he's going to be wading into space battles by himself.

Here's the episode of The Star Wars Show that reveals the new ship, although it doesn't appear until one minute into the video:

If director Rian Johnson wants the character to be in any way taken seriously, Ren needs to show some serious skill behind the controls of his TIE Silencer, especially as the conventions of the series dictate that he should end up in a dogfight with the guy who sassed him on Jakku at some point in this movie, his fellow pilot Poe Dameron. The official Star Wars databank calls Ren an "expert pilot" and suggests he has inherited Han's flying skills, so we'll see.

If Kylo Ren did actually blow up Dameron's ship, then he'd instantly start looking more formidable and less like the latest in a long line of whiny Skywalkers. If he fails to be absolutely spectacular, though, then all those Emo Kylo Ren memes will also start making fun of how useless he is at flying.

Maybe the new trilogy of Star Wars movies will all be built around Kylo's character arc. The original trilogy morphed into the story of the redemption of Darth Vader - Episode VII onwards could well be the story of Kylo finally growing out of his difficult phase and realizing that being dark and brooding isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi comes out December 15, 2017.
