'The X-Files' Season 11 Will See Mitch Pileggi Return as FBI Agent Skinner
Fox
With yet another season of The X-Files coming soon-ish after their 2015 revival, it wouldn't be right for Fox Mulder and Dana Scully to go too far without their gruff but loyal boss, FBI Assistant Director Walter Skinner.

And fortunately, they won't have to. According to Deadline, actor Mitch Pileggi (who plays Skinner) will be returning for more episodes of Fox's hit paranormal crime procedural. There's no word on how many of the 10 new episodes Skinner will appear in, as despite his inclusion in season 10's opening theme, his appearances in the revival were pretty minor.

Hopefully he'll appear more often in season 11. While he's never been as important as Mulder and Scully, his rough demeanor and willingness to make backroom deals with villains like the Cigarette Smoking Man always made him a good character foil to the two heroes, whether he's yelling at Mulder for abandoning FBI protocol, or yelling at Scully because she let Mulder abandon FBI protocol.

So far, he's the only character confirmed to be returning besides stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, the latter of whom is fresh off her appearance as the villainous Media in American Gods. For better or for worse, the X-Files revival got fairly experimental and only paid attention to the show's long running myth arc in a handful of its six episodes.

But considering the revival's myth episodes weren't as strong as some monster-of-the-week stories like "Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster," it's possible they'll focus less on alien invasions and more on standalone stories. Which would mean we'd see less characters like the Cigarette Smoking Man, although it would be surprising if he didn't at least show up for a cameo - the revival's penchant for fanservice saw plenty of those, including cameos from the dead Lone Gunmen.

And considering the show retconned several important bits of its mythology anyway, a monster-of-the-week focus with several cameos is probably a safe bet. If we're lucky, we might even get a sequel episode about last season's Were-Monster, played by Rhys Darby (Flight of the Conchords, Voltron)

But regardless, it's good to see Skinner back. The X-Files season 11 should begin filming this summer, shooting for a premiere in either late 2017 or early 2018.
