First 'Pacific Rim: Uprising' Teaser Shows John Boyega Recruiting New Jaeger Pilots
Legendary Pictures
The first teaser for Pacific Rim: Uprising (previously titled Pacific Rim: Maelstrom) is here, and viewers are supposed to be blown away by the new generation of Jaegers (the Pacific Rim term for "giant robots"). After all, the majority of the teaser plays like a commercial for a new smartphone.

There's a problem, though. With voice acting this good, it's hard not to be distracted from the Jaeger designs while watching - the sounds really overpower this short clip, with an almost sinister undertone that the creators possibly didn't intend with this recruitment video for potential Jaeger pilots:

Sure, the new robots are pretty. We can finally see here the teased Evangelion inspired designs of these very Japanese-looking mechs, which is the perfect evolution for the sequel, considering the entire series is the distilled American experience of watching anime while high. The problem, unfortunately, is that it's far too easy to zone out while watching and to start worrying that maybe these robots are being slyly sarcastic.

But that voice actor, Ellen McLain, is more famous for playing GlaDOS, the sadistic and passive aggressive psychopathic robot from the Portal games, and anyone who's played those should be hard wired to approach anything she says with suspicion. As the voice of Gypsy Danger in the first movie (the robot used by Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kinkuchi), she appears to be voicing the new machine "Gypsy Avenger" here.

The result is a feeling of unease, as if the recruitment ad is sarcastically listing all of the wondrous features of Jaegers in a bid to distract you from an oncoming robot uprising, even when the robots are supposedly on our side. Maybe that's the point - maybe the "Jaeger Uprising" isn't quite as benevolent as we'd expect. This teaser does have a "what could go wrong?" vibe, so it's possible we're being subconsciously primed for a Jaeger revolution.

McLain isn't the only actor in this short clip to knock it out of the park, because John Boyega is an absolute master of accents, and in just four words, "Join the Jaeger Uprising", he really manages to sell his role as the son of Idris Elba's character. It's absolutely perfect - something about the tone of Boyega's voice, the particular British pronunciation that he's opted for, make him sound like a more youthful Elba.

It's a different accent to his voice in The Force Awakens, sure, but it's also different to his speech in Attack the Block. It's also helped by his facial expressions and his tiny moustache - you can really believe him as Stacker Pentecost's progeny.

This movie has cool robots, fantastic actors, and the possibility of a tense robot-on-robot war. It might not have Guillermo del Toro attached this time (Steven S. DeKnight is directing), but Pacific Rim: Uprising could easily become every bit as fun as the original.

Pacific Rim: Uprising is scheduled to come out February 23, 2018.
