'Game of Thrones' Comic-Con Trailer Hints at Strange New Alliances
HBO
Spoilers for season seven of Game of Thrones below.

The idea of HBO releasing a Game of Thrones trailer after one episode of season seven has already aired is a little unusual, for sure. And considering that first episode, "Dragonstone," broke a whole lot of records at HBO, they probably didn't need the extra boost.

But they released a "Weeks Ahead" trailer at San Diego Comic-Con all the same, setting up a clear warpath for the three rulers as Westeros inevitably descends into chaos. The trailer includes a couple reveals that could definitely count as spoilers, so if you've seen enough marketing and you know you'll keep watching no matter what, you may want to steer clear until Sunday's new episode. But if you're curious what direction season seven is heading in, check it out below:

There aren't too many big revelations for Cersei here, because we already know what she wants: to rule all of Westeros, south and north, and destroy the "Mad King's heir" before that heir sets all her dragons loose in King's Landing. But on the other hand, the King in the North is very interested in those dragons - Jon Snow could not care less about who controls Westeros, because the White Walkers will just freeze the Iron Throne regardless of who's sitting on all those swords.

Which makes for the first big reveal in the trailer: Jon wants to team up with Daenerys Targaryen, in the hopes that her dragons could burn up some wights up north. But of course, that's easier said than done - Sansa is sure to challenge him on that, and nobody in the North trusts the Targaryens. Which would make things dangerous for Jon Snow if anyone suspected that the North is being ruled by a half-Targaryen bastard. Especially if Bran, the only living person who knows about such a thing, was heading straight for Winterfell in his sled. That wouldn't be good.

And besides, Dany won't be willing to work with a King in the North who won't bend the knee, unless she hears a very convincing argument. Which brings us to the trailer's second big reveal - the Red Priestess Melisandre has found her way to Dragonstone after being sent into exile by Jon Snow and Davos (and for good reason). She still seems to be loyal toward Jon, however, because she tells Dany "I believe you have a role to play, as does another."

Assuming that "another" is Jon Snow, the two rulers might start negotiating sooner than we thought. Unless someone like Littlefinger or Euron Greyjoy throws a spanner into the works, but hey, that's part of the fun in this show.

Game of Thrones continues July 23, 2017 with "Stormborn".
