'Ready Player One' Trailer Shows Steven Spielberg's Tale About Virtual Reality
Warner Bros.
Ready Player One is a movie adaptation of a book, about a video game. And much like Ernest Cline's original novel was full of flashy VR scenes, harsh dystopian sci-fi, and nostalgic easter Eggs, the new movie from Steven Spielberg looks to have plenty of all that too.

Spielberg finally revealed the first official footage from his upcoming sci-fi movie at San Diego Comic-Con, and it's a vast improvement over the handful of promo images Warner Bros. had shown us previously. Not to say those images weren't visually striking, but the first Ready Player One trailer is even more striking.

Check it out below, and if you've read the novel, you'll know that you should be closely analyzing this footage for Easter eggs.

The story focuses on a teenager named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan from X-Men: Apocalypse) who goes by the name of "Parzival" in a virtual reality MMORPG called the OASIS. Like most people in this dark future ravaged by abject poverty and climate change, Wade escapes from it all by spending all his time in the VR game. And when the game's eccentric creator passes away, he leaves behind a message stating that the first person to find a hidden Easter egg in the game will inherit his vast fortune.

It's a typical sort of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory style of story, about a poor boy who finds himself with a shot at riches due to some eccentric millionaire, but with a much nerdier twist on the story. We don't get to see very much of that story in this trailer - we see that Wade is poor, and that the OASIS game is awesome - but the visuals of all the craziness and escapism one finds in the VR world look amazing. It's definitely up to Spielberg's usual level of quality, so far.

And much like in the OASIS, there are plenty of references to older movies hidden inside this trailer, from obvious ones like the Iron Giant or the Tron light cycle, to the less noticeable ones like a Freddy Krueger who gets blasted in a war scene, or the remix of Gene Wilder's "Pure Imagination" song from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. There's undoubtedly even more secrets in there, waiting to be found on second or third viewings.

Ready Player One comes out March 30, 2018.
