'Captain Marvel' Will Take Place in the '90s and Include the Skrulls
Marvel
Even though Captain Marvel is set to make her official debut in Avengers: Infinity War next summer, we won't actually see the Captain Marvel movie until the year after, in March 2019.

And the Captain Marvel movie won't be set in March 2019 - it's going to take place during the 1990s, according to an announcement made by Marvel Studios bigwig Kevin Feige at their very eventful San Diego Comic-Con panel. Which means Carol Danvers (played by Brie Larson) will have been active in the MCU long before Iron Man built himself a suit and Nick Fury started the Avengers Initiative.

It also means you should expect a lot of denim and grunge music, because this is Marvel's first historical movie since their WWII-era Captain America: The First Avenger.

As for why nobody's ever thought to mention a flying woman with super strength and energy beams in the MCU, especially if she's been around for so long, it's possible that she's been in space the whole time. This is backed up by Marvel's next announcement that the Skrulls are going to be villains in Captain Marvel, which is huge news.

The Skrulls are a species of shapeshifting aliens who are major villains in famous Marvel comics like Secret Invasion - while they have a tendency to replace human superheroes with Skrull imposters (how do you think Secret Invasion got its name?), they're also constantly at war with the alien Kree, who've already appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy thanks to Ronan the Accuser. So if we had to guess, Captain Marvel is going to be set partly in good old 1990s, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" planet Earth, and partly in the cosmic space setting that GotG and Infinity War are building.

While it won't be an adaptation of Secret Invasion since there aren't any other Marvel heroes at that point in time, it could tell a similar story or even set up an eventual Secret Invasion movie further down the line in the MCU. Well, "no other Marvel heroes" isn't completely accurate, since Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury is confirmed to be making an appearance without an eyepatch, according to Feige. While Fury does have an eye underneath that patch, it's badly scarred and probably doesn't work, so expect to see Fury lose that eye during the movie.

Historical films set in the 1990s are sort of a new idea, just because most people haven't gotten used the fact that it was all two decades ago. Expect a lot of nostalgic Easter eggs and the like to appear, because that seems like a no-brainer in this age where '90s nostalgia makes so much money. If you're the type of person who calls themselves a "90s kid," then you'll be right at home. Just please stop calling yourself that.

Captain Marvel is scheduled to come out March 8, 2019.
