'Blade Runner 2049' Adds Hans Zimmer to Compose New Music
Warner Bros.
The music in Blade Runner is simple, but it's such an important part of the movie - composer Vangelis' moody synth score is just as iconic as any of the visuals, and Blade Runner 2049 will need to play some similar tunes if it wants to capture the first movie's atmosphere.

While the Vangelis-like music we've heard in the trailers is reassuring, the Greek synth maestro isn't returning for the sequel which comes out in October. Up until now, composer Jóhann Jóhannsson has been in charge of 2049's music, but director Denis Villeneuve recently told Studio Cine Live that he's adding some new names to help with the score: Benjamin Wallfisch (It, Hidden Figures) and famous movie composer Hans Zimmer:

Opening quote
"Benjamin Wallfisch and Hans Zimmer joined the team to help Johann. It's hard to get to Vangelis' angle. We have Johann's breathtaking atmospheric sounds, but I needed other things, and Hans helped us."
Closing quote

Zimmer is one of the biggest names in movie music right now, having worked on everything from Pirates of the Caribbean to superhero movies like Man of Steel and The Dark Knight (although he's recently sworn off the genre), while also working with director Christopher Nolan on most of his films like Interstellar and Dunkirk. Much of his music sounds like the bass-heavy Inception theme that's so common nowadays, but hey, Zimmer wrote the Inception theme too.

Since Villeneuve explicitly said Jóhannsson isn't leaving the project, it sounds like Zimmer is coming onboard to either compose additional music or revamp what's there to better capture that Blade Runner tone. While it implies that the director may not have much faith in Jóhannsson, it doesn't otherwise seem like anything to be concerned about, and Zimmer is always a reassuring name to see on a project.

And they're going to need that extra music, since Villeneuve recently told Collider that this film won't have any noir-style narration like the original movie.

Blade Runner 2049 comes out October 6, 2017.
