Concept Artist Gives Fans a Closer Look at Adam Warlock's Cocoon From 'Guardians Vol 2'

If the post-credits scenes for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 left you wanting to see more of Adam Warlock (or, more accurately, his giant metal cocoon), then today's your lucky day. Ian Joyner, a freelance artist who provided concept designs on Guardians Vol. 2, has released a close-up look at his work on the cocoon that houses Adam in the final Sovereign scene of the movie. While this was a fun moment in the film (that comes full of particular excitement and anticipation for long-time comic book fans), something about seeing the image by itself makes it look all the more spectacular.

Said Joyner of his work on the design:

Opening quote
"I did a lot of passes on the Cocoon for the end tag of guardians(SPOILERS!), which was a lot of fun as I always loved when they showed up in the cosmic books from Marvel! The final look shown here had lot of golden hues/tech that tied into the sovereigns world and really looked awesome on screen. Luma did the final pass on this, taking this design/ 3d asset and bringing it to the next level with details and surfacing. I can not wait to see who or what might come out of this thing in the future! If I can get permission I will show the other designs some day as well."
Closing quote

Sometimes, in the excitement that comes with a big blockbuster movie, it's easy to overlook the details of the props, and seeing the cocoon by itself makes its ribbed, spinal design all the more noticeable. There are almost elements of HR Giger in here, albeit without all the phallic imagery that makes the xenomorph stand out, and this kind of visual reference probably isn't an accident when sci-fi horror buff James Gunn is putting a movie together.

The big question that this creates, then, is whether Adam Warlock will resemble the Sovereign, or whether he'll have his own, distinct design. Certainly, the Sovereign have lost a lot of their potential danger, having been beaten by a distracted team of Guardians who have bigger fish to fry in the climax of their second movie. What's more, after you've seen a Sovereign pilot throw a tantrum after his drone is destroyed and you realize that this is basically an arcade adventure for the golden people, it's hard to take them seriously. The different design of Adam's cocoon may hint that, whatever comes out of there, he won't look quite as shiny and yellow as his peers.

One would think that this character would be a perfect inclusion in the intergalactic superhero space opera that is Infinity War, not least because Adam Warlock is a major part of the comic story arc that the movie is loosely based on. Kevin Feige has rejected this idea, though, stating that the cocoon won't open until Guardians Vol 3. Since that date is so far away, it does suggest that Marvel probably doesn't have a solid plan in mind for Adam Warlock's design just yet. In the meantime, though, we have this awesome sarcophagus.
