Rumor: Stephen Meyer Is Working on a 'Star Trek' Mini-Series That Explores Khan's Origins

Stephen Meyer, the creator of the legendary Star Trek villain (as well as the director of his first appearance in a movie, Star Trek II), has been hinting for a while now that he might have some mysterious new project in the works which will take place in Gene Roddenberry's famous science-fiction universe. A mainstay of Trek projects over the past few decades, Meyer is one of many classic Trek creators to lend his talents to the upcoming Star Trek: Discovery, and it seems that, off the back of that, CBS might be giving him a passion project to work on.

According to Geek Exchange, unnamed sources close to the project claim that Meyer is working on a miniseries that tells Khan's origin story, leading to the events of Wrath of Khan and his war against James Tiberius Kirk. Obviously, the fact that there's no hard evidence backing up these claims means that this news should be taken with a big, crunchy grain of salt, but it does fit with Meyers' recent hints as to what he'll be working on when Star Trek: Discovery is a little more established.

Perhaps the hardest part of this story to swallow is the idea that CBS is interested in making any more Star Trek shows before Discovery is out in the wild. By all accounts, original showrunner Bryan Fuller had to fight pretty hard to get the show greenlit in the first place, and the network has been eager to downsize the project as much as possible in order to prove its marketability before committing to some of Fuller's more outlandish ideas. If this is in the works, it makes sense that it would still be very early days for Meyer on the project, especially since if Discovery does poorly, CBS won't want to be saddled with a spin-off series that nobody wants.

That said, the timing links up with Discovery fairly well—as the upcoming show is itself a prequel to the original Star Trek, another show set in the same era telling Khan's story would fit comfortably with the production work that's already been undertaken. If rumors of this Khan prequel turn out to be true, it might suggest that whether or not this show ever materializes, there could be plans for Discovery to feature a young Khan in one episode to act as a potential bridge to the miniseries, should CBS decide to go ahead with the project.

Alternatively, this could just be wishful thinking on the part of fans who have heard Stephen Meyer's recent comments about a potential second show, and who desperately want to see a well-written series about the character. Benedict Cumberbatch is a fine actor, but his turn as Khan didn't exactly do justice to the famous character in Star Trek Into Darkness. It would be nice, then, to see a slightly more accurate version of the character, created for a modern audience, with the beautiful props and sets that make Discovery look so fantastic.
