'Star Wars: Episode IX' Adds a New Writer to Fix Up the Script
Lucasfilm/Disney
Star Wars: The Last Jedi is still half a year away from theaters, but Lucasfilm has already been working on Episode IX for some time. And while The Last Jedi only has one credited writer in Rian Johnson, who's directing the film as well, Episode IX apparently needs some more polish from more writers.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lucasfilm has hired screenwriter Jack Thorne to take a pass at the Episode IX script, which was first drafted by the movie's director Colin Trevorrow and his writing partner Derek Connolly.

Thorne has most recently written the upcoming Julia Roberts/Jacob Tremblay film Wonder and the first episode of the also-upcoming Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams anthology series, but he's also written for several British shows like Skins, The Fades, The Last Panthers and National Treasure (no relation to the Nicolas Cage movie).

There isn't too much sci-fi on his resume, but he's certainly worked within the genre thanks to Electric Dreams, even if we haven't seen the results of that just yet. He was also supposed to write the movie adaptation of Neil Gaiman's Sandman back when that project was still likely happening. However, ever since Joseph Gordon-Levitt left the Sandman movie, that's been trapped in an eternal slumber, so to speak, so don't expect to see Thorne's work there any time soon.

It's tough to tell exactly how routine this move is, especially since Lucasfilm isn't the type of studio to publicly disparage their talent if Trevorrow was at fault. It's easy to think that the disastrous response to Trevorrow's recent movie The Book of Henry has made Lucasfilm a little nervous about their Episode IX director, but The Force Awakens and Rogue One also had a few different writers. Also, Trevorrow's made plenty of better movies like Jurassic World and Safety Not Guaranteed.

More screenwriters isn't always a bad sign. After all, Spider-Man: Homecoming has a whopping six screenwriters on it, and that turned out great. Some people might panic anyway because that's just what they do, but it's far too early to be concerned about any of this yet.

Star Wars: Episode IX is scheduled to come out May 24, 2019.
