It's hard to get a read on Deadpool 2 from the set photos we've seen thus far. For example, the new photo of Josh Brolin as Cable, posing with his muscles flexed, while sitting next to a teeny tiny Deadpool—what is actually going on here? Is this a small fan of the show, an actor in the movie, or, as The Hollywood Reporter suggests, a model prop from the film?

Considering that a child should under absolutely no circumstances be allowed to watch Deadpool, we have to assume that this is some kind of doll that's being used in the movie.

Perhaps this little Deadpool is simply a stand-in for a digital version of the Merc with a Mouth who'll appear in the final movie, used on set to help the cinematographer get the right sense of scale when dealing with a Deadpool that's smaller than another character, most likely Cable. After all, as fans have been quick to point out, Josh Brolin doesn't quite appear as ridiculously huge and imposing as his character from the comics (it's not his fault—no real human being could possibly live up to the hulking mass of a Nineties comic book character). Maybe Deadpool 2 will incorporate some Lord of the Rings style forced perspective in order to make Cable look bigger than he actually is.

If this is the case, then we could see Cable measuring up to be the same kind of size as Colossus, with Deadpool bouncing around enthusiastically as he does everything he can to annoy a large, grumpy, incredibly muscular straight man. If this is the case, it would seem that Colossus himself wouldn't be needed in the same kind of role that he inhabits in the first movie, which makes Stefan Kapicic's suggestion of his character's larger, more nuanced role in Deadpool 2 all the more interesting.

It's worth assuming that new director David Leitch will be avoiding simply making Cable the new Colossus, but this size dynamic has worked in the movie series thus far, so it's not impossible that Deadpool 2 might tread similar ground with an oversized, comic-book-accurate Cable on hand to react in annoyance to Wade Wilson's jokes and references.

Alternatively, Deadpool might have just taken to carrying around a store window mannequin that's dressed in his signature outfit. With a character this bizarre, no explanation is completely off the table.

That being said, it's strange how open the filming of Deadpool 2 is compared to some of Fox's most recent movies. Logan was shot entirely in secret—something that was no doubt made easier by the fact that most of the film is set in the middle of the desert. By contrast, Deadpool 2's filming seems completely transparent, with set photos and character portraits coming at an unprecedented pace.

Perhaps that's just the difference between Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman when it comes to using social media. Either way, we're looking forward to seeing more of Lil' Deadpool and Cable.

Deadpool 2 is set to hit US theaters in 2018.
