Netflix Releases 'Stranger Things' Posters Based on Classic 1980s Movies

We won't start by saying something like "Halloween is getting closer," because Halloween is still several months away, as is the premiere of Stranger Things' second season just before then.

But that hasn't stopped Netflix from getting into the Halloween spirit this fine August, starting a weekly event on their Twitter called "Stranger Thursdays", where they re-watch episodes of the original season and talk about the many scary '80s movies that influenced the Emmy-nominated show.

They plan to end the Twitter series just when season two begins, and they've been starting each with a nostalgic poster that adds Hawkins residents (and one resident of the Upside Down) into recreations of said influential '80s movies. Here's the latest one, based not-so-subtly on Wes Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street, substituting a Demogorgon for Freddy Krueger:

There's an impressive amount of effort in that, going so far as to recreate all the details in the fonts. But then again, this is Netflix we're talking about, and they probably have enough money and resources to recreate every poster from the 1980s if they wanted to. But for now, they're only done with a couple.

Here's the first one from the week before, a riff on Rob Reiner's Stand By Me, which was a Stephen King adaptation about a group of boys who go searching in the woods for a dead body. So, similar themes to Stranger Things, although not quite the same premise.

It sounds like there's going to be plenty more film references coming out of the very prolific Stranger Things Twitter account as Halloween approaches. If we had to guess, there's probably some tributes to Alien, Firestarter, E.T., etc. coming, and something from John Carpenter is a good bet as well. The show also has some unmistakable Twin Peaks vibes, but that's not a movie nor is it from the '80s.

Either way, if your calendar's not marked for Halloween, you could always just count how many "Stranger Thursdays" have passed on Netflix's Twitter. Or you could just mark Halloween on your calendar.

Stranger Things season two comes out October 27, 2017 on Netflix.
