Guillermo Del Toro Reveals Pacific Rim 2 Details
Guillermo del Toro remains hopeful that a sequel to this summer's Pacific Rim is going to happen. Speaking to IGN to promote the Blu-Ray release of Pacific Rim, del Toro confirmed that he and Travis Beachem were busy writing a story for the sequel, but admits that it is yet to be greenlit by Lionsgate. "..we are definitely writing the sequel. Travis Beachem and I are writing, so that is active." said del Toro. "The decision to green light or not, that's above my pay rate."
It is expected that, after a strong overseas performance and an increasing cult following among sci-fi fans, Lionsgate will give a Pacific Rim sequel the green light, but how do you follow a story like that of the first movie? Well, del Toro has some pretty wacky tricks up his sleeve as he revealed to MTV earlier this year. "..you're going to see a merging of Kaiju and Jaeger. And that is something quite special" said del Toro. "Just think about it for a second, we sent Gypsy to the other side right? It exploded, but whatever remains, stays there."
So could this mean that the Kaiju are going to return to Earth tooled up with Jaeger technology? That's an awesome prospect, and when you consider the fact that the humans were already messing around inside the brains of Kaiju, things could get very, very messy.
Whatever happens, after the first movie, we're confident that del Toro and Beachem can deliver yet another outrageously fun movie, we just have to hope that Lionsgate share those sentiments too.
