Civilization Will Allow Players To Conquer Alien Worlds In New Game 'Beyond Earth'

Sid Meier's Civilization games have been allowing players to conquer vast swathes of Earth planet since the release of MicroProse's first game in 1991. Over 20 years later and the legendary strategy series is turning its attentions to outer space with a new release entitled Civilization: Beyond Earth. The release of the new title was announced over the weekend, but Civilization V conquerors may have noticed a hint after successfully launching a spaceship in the 2010 release.

In an homage to Sid Meier's 1999 game, Alpha Centauri, Civilization: Beyond Earth will transport gamers to a future in which humans have been forced to spread the wings in an effort to colonize alien planets across the farthest reaches of space.

"Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth is a new science fiction themed entry into the award-winning Civilization series," reads the official description. "Set in the future, global events have destabilized the world leading to a collapse of modern society, a new world order and an uncertain future for humanity. As the human race struggles to recover, the re-developed nations focus their resources on deep space travel to chart a new beginning for mankind."

Civilization: Beyond Earth is scheduled for release this fall and the weekend's announcement was met with great fanfare by gamers who have waited four years for a new original Civilization title. This latest effort looks like it will blow the socks off of anything Civ fans have ever seen before, with a seemingly endless list of new features leading to an exciting and suitably alien experience.

Beyond Earth will feature alien races that will act not just as scenery, but as an extra player that one can interact with by befriending, conquering or even domesticating. Added variation will be added to the game right from the get go when players must choose from one of eight Earth organizations to sponsor your mission. A player's choice of sponsor will impact the type of mission they embark on, the cargo you take with you and the type of ships that you travel on.

While it may not offer anything revolutionary in terms of core gameplay, Civilization: Beyond Earth truly looks like it is going to be an enticing title for both newcomers and seasoned Civ gamers alike. If you're not convinced, just check out the glorious announcement trailer up top.
