See Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron in the First Images from Mad Max: Fury Road

The first images of the upcoming reboot of the dystopic Western franchise Mad Max have finally arrived, and after 25 years in development hell, we're sure everyone involved is enormously relieved that the film is actually going forward.

The newest installment in the franchise, titled Mad Max: Fury Road, portrays a dystopic desert wasteland in which law and order has disintegrated in the face of energy shortages. The titular Max, played by Tom Hardy, is a taciturn man who was an officer of the Main Force Patrol, an organization that fought for peace on the dangerous roads of the outback. In the first film, he went on a revenge killing spree after his wife and son were murdered by a biker gang, and he then spent the next two films dealing with the tangible and psychological consequences of his actions. His character description for the fourth film reads: "a man of action and a man of few words, who seeks peace of mind following the loss of his wife and child in the aftermath of the chaos."

Warner Bros. also released a character description for Charlize Theron's character, Furiosa (I haven't seen the film yet, but I'm willing to bet that name is fairly on-the-nose): "a woman of action and a woman who believes her path to survival may be achieved if she can make it across the desert back to her childhood homeland."

The released images also feature a monstrously pale Nicholas Hoult. We can't imagine why he would be so pale in an apocalyptic desert wasteland, but I'm sure they'll explain that in the film:

The original Mad Max, which was released in 1979 and starred Mel Gibson in one of his first film roles, held the Guinness world record for most profitable film for nearly twenty years, when it was unseated by The Blair Witch Project. It also significantly contributed to introducing global cinema to the Australian New Wave. It was followed by two sequels, but the upcoming reboot will be the first installment in the franchise in nearly 30 years. Gibson was originally attached to star in the fourth film, but lost interest after the year 2000.

The new film has been described by director George Miller as one long chase sequence, and these images definitely support that characterization:
