Stephen Hawking Biopic 'The Theory of Everything' Brought The Astronomer To Tears

James Marsh's Stephen Hawking biopic, The Theory of Everything, is one of the most interesting movie prospects of 2014. Starring Eddie Redmayne as Hawking and Felicity Jones as his wife Jane, the movie made its debut last night at the Toronto International Film Festival and during a Q & A after the screening, the audience learnt that Marsh's movie had made a profound impact on the man who inspired it.

During the session, it was revealed that Stephen Hawking himself had already watched the movie during a small screening a few days ago, and the experience was so profound it brought him to tears. When the credits rolled, Hawking was said to have had tears wiped away from his cheek by a nurse before stating that the events depicted in the movie were "broadly true."

Hawking has had some involvement in the making of the movie, giving Marsh and co. license to use his now-iconic speech synthesizer and spending some time with the cast and crew. Redmayne described his nervous excitement at being able to meet Hawking in real life and admitted that one of our generation's greatest minds was less than impressed with the his ramblings. At one point, Redmayne revealed that he tried to make small-talk about the fact they pair shared the same star sign (Capricorn), however Hawking simply replied "I'm an astronomer, not an astrologer."

But while the cast's chatter didn't impress Hawking, it seems as though the movie depicting his early scholarly years has done. An endorsement by the subject matter is gold dust for any biopic, but when that subject matter is a man as great as Stephen Hawking, it seems all the more impressive. And Hawking isn't the only one who is looking fondly on the movie, either. Early reviews of The Theory of Everything have been largely positive with many heaping praise on what looks to be a career-defining performance by Eddie Redmayne.

The Theory of Everything is released in theaters on November 7th.
