Under the Dome's Mike Vogel to Star in Syfy Minseries Childhood's End
Under the Dome star Mike Vogel has been tapped to star in Syfy's anticipated adaptation of sci-fi classic Childhood's End as protagonist Ricky Stormgren, "a midwestern farmer whose life is turned upside down when he is chosen to be the sole representative on Earth for an alien species apparently seeking to aide humanity." According to an official description of the character, "Ricky struggles with his new-found fame as a blue collar prophet, facing the weight of the entire world looking to him for answers."
Childhood's End, a novel written by 2001: A Space Odyssey's Arthur C. Clarke, is considered to be a classic of sci-fi literature. It details a peaceful invasion by an alien species called the Overlords who eliminate war, institute a benevolent tyranny, and turn Earth into an apparent utopia. But when their presence begins to give human children telekinetic powers, the consequences threaten the entire human race. Syfy greenlit the project as a six-episode miniseries, to be directed by Sherlock's Nick Hurran and executive produced by Lone Survivor's Akiva Goldsman and The Social Network's Mike DeLuca.
Vogel joins a cast that includes Emmy-nominated Game of Thrones alum Charles Dance, who will play alien Overlord leader Karellen, as well as Osy Ikhile and Ashley Zukerman. Zukerman will play Jake Greggson, described as "an American production designer with artistic sensibilities" and one of the parents of children who begin to exhibit telekinetic powers.
Childhood's End will air on Syfy sometime in 2015.
