Oscar Isaac to Play Titular Villain in X-Men Apocalypse
Last we heard, Oscar Isaac was in contention to play Dr. Strange (but then again, who wasn't?), but it turns out he's officially signed on to play another Marvel comics character: the titular villain in the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse.
The character Apocalypse is possibly the first living being with the X mutant gene, clocking in at 5,000 years old. In the X-Men series, he emerges as the evil leader of a ruling class of mutants that has taken over the world and enslaved humans. The film, which will take place ten years after Days of Future Past, will focus on the rise of Apocalypse as well as the relationship between Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender). It will also feature young versions of many of the characters as a result of the timeline shift, including Cyclops, Storm, and Jean Grey.
Other big names previously suggested to be in talks for the role included Tom Hardy and Idris Elba, both of whom have experience playing comic book characters (Bane and Heimdall, respectively). However, sources say that Bryan considered Isaac to be a "favorite" for the role from the very beginning.
Isaac is set to have a big year in sci-fi, with roles in the newest Star Wars film and the indie android thriller Ex Machina. He is also getting Oscar buzz for his role in the gangster drama A Most Violent Year.
