The First Official Terminator: Genisys Trailer Has Finally Arrived

After months of rumors about a crazy timeline, mockeries of the title's dumb spelling, a motion poster, and an annoyingly insubstantial trailer teaser, the first full trailer for Terminator: Genisys is finally here.

Like the original Terminator film, Terminator: Genisys follows Kyle Reese as he is sent back in time to find Sarah Connor and prevent Skynet from rising. He expects to find the Sarah Connor who was a helpless waitress in the first film, but the past has inadvertently been changed, and he instead finds a hardened warrior who has been raised by a Terminator programmed to protect her.

Anyone would have trouble following Linda Hamilton's iconic take on Sarah Connor in Terminator 2: Judgment Day, but the talented Emilia Clarke seems to hold her own, and flipping the famous line, "Come with me if you want to live," puts a refreshingly feminist spin on the proceedings. Indeed, the often shirtless Jai Courtney is objectified much more than Emilia Clarke, who seems to escape being treated as a sex symbol. That's progress, I guess?

The trailer had a couple other winks to the original franchise, particularly the infamous "I'll be back" line, which is said in a very different context. Those winks could get annoying if they're peppered throughout the film, but it's very possible they're just highlighting it in the trailer as a nod to the fans of the original movies. The effects are unsurprisingly goo; the bus flipping over was a little much for my taste, but I can always use more T-1000 in my life. Overall, the story seems to diverge enough from the franchise's timeline that it won't feel like an unnecessary retread, and the high-caliber cast could elevate this far above the typical action reboot.

Terminator: Genisys also stars Jason Clarke as John Connor and Doctor Who's Matt Smith in an as-yet-unnamed role. The film will be released on July 1, 2015.
