Fast and Furious Director to Helm Star Trek 3
Justin Lin has officially been tapped to direct the third installment of the Star Trek reboot, starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Zoe Saldana. He is replacing Roberto Orci, who stepped down as director early this month but will remain as producer.
Lin was previously reported to be part of a five-strong shortlist for Star Trek 3 that also included Rise of the Planet of the Apes's Rupert Wyatt, The Imitation Game's Morten Tyldum, Source Code's Duncan Jones, and Safe House's Daniel Espinosa. There were rumors that Wyatt was the first choice, as he was the first to meet with the studio, but Lin was ultimately the studio's choice.
Lin is best known for directing several installments of the Fast and Furious series, as well as the upcoming Bourne Betrayal, which will star Jeremy Renner and is set to begin production after another Bourne installment starring Matt Damon.
Lin is actually a more conventional choice of director than we've been seeing for other big sci-fi franchises. Godzilla and the Amazing Spider-Man series were both given to directors who were known solely for indies, and Wonder Woman was recently given to Michelle MacLaren, who is primarily known for her work in television. Although Lin has never directed a sci-fi tentpole specifically, his experience with the Fast and Furious films will certainly prepare him for another action-heavy franchise, for better and for worse.
Star Trek 3 is scheduled to be released in 2016.
