Joseph Kahn's NSFW Power Rangers Short Starring Katee Sackhoff Will Blow You Away

Update: A deal has been struck and the Power/Rangers video is back online in all its bloody glory!

When Saban and Lionsgate announced they would be rebooting the Power Rangers and bringing them to the big screen, the Internet erupted into a cacophony of sighs and laughter. But filmmaker Joseph Kahn knew there was potential in a more adult version of this childhood classic, so he assembled Battlestar Galactica's Katee Sackhoff, James Van Der Beek and more for what he has described as a "Deboot of the Power Rangers. My take on the FAN FILM. Not a pilot, not a series, not for profit, strictly for exhibition. After watching the 14-minute short, I can tell you, if you were a fan of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers as a kid, Joseph Kahn's take on these heroes will absolutely blow you away.

The fact that Dredd's Adi Shankar served as Producer on the project should tell you enough about its pedigree, but if Kahn can do this just for fun, just think what he could do with a Hollywood budget behind him. The director reveals that it was Shankar's connections that helped secure the talent of Sackhoff and Van Der Beek, but it turns out that the entire project was put together using a lot of good will from a lot of talented people.

"I don't like shooting anything halfway on anything I do," said Kahn in an interview with HitFix "In my day job, I'm a commercial music video director, so whatever budget you give me I'm going to throw in everything I know to the best of my ability to execute at the highest level. And so even if it's a fan film, I used all my resources. We made this on very little money. Am I proud that we made it on very little money? Actually, no, because I don't really like asking for favors, and I don't really like people working for below their rate and stuff like that, but I really didn't have any choice. So you really ended up getting like a real Hollywood movie, just because I asked a ton of favors."

And we're thankful he did ask for those favors, because the end product isn't just beautifully put together, it's incredibly well acted as well. So why did Kahn put this spectacular project together? In his conversations with HitFix Kahn divulges that it is all part of a commentary on how Hollywood movies are put together these days.

"It's not just Lionsgate but all of Hollywood, they all keep toying around with this 'dark and gritty' concept, and they're all PG-13. I mean…. look at the gunshots. You have a guy going in there shooting a bunch of people and it's just like puffs of smoke. There's no repercussions to these gunshots, which to me is even more dangerous than when you actually show some blood. You're teaching kids that you can shoot a gun and there's no repercussions to it."

That's a sentiment that I think we can all get on board with.
