David Ayer Shares First Set Photos from Suicide Squad, Calls Jared Leto's Joker 'Majestic'

When it comes to Suicide Squad, the prospect of Jared Leto as the Joker has inspired the most pronounced reaction from the fandom, and with good reason. Not only is Joker the most famous character in the film by far, Leto is also following Heath Ledger's Dark Knight Joker, which is one of the most iconic comic book performances of all time. But now there's a bit of encouraging news from an admittedly biased source; when director David Ayer was asked to describe Leto's interpretation of the villain in one word, he replied "majestic."

He also shared this tease of Leto's preparation for the role, as it's just about time for him to cut that famous long hair:

Ayer has also been sharing the first pictures of the Suicide Squad set over the past couple of weeks. Although the actual sets don't look like much of anything yet, as principal photography doesn't start until April, there are a few interesting tidbits in there, such as a flamethrower, the Squad's weapons, and Jai Courtney getting into fight mode as Boomerang.

Suicide Squad follows several DC Comics supervillains (mostly Batman villains) who are forced into indentured servitude for the government in order to earn their freedom. They act as deniable assets, essentially doing the government's dirty work and black ops.

The cast of Suicide Squad also includes Viola Davis as the Squad's overseer, Amanda Waller, Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jared Leto as The Joker, and Cara Delevingne as Enchantress. Tom Hardy was originally attached to play Rick Flagg, but he had to drop out as a result of scheduling issues, and Robocop's Joel Kinnaman is reportedly set to take his place

Suicide Squad is set to be released on August 5, 2016.
